Hornell, NY began its life as a major business center with the boom of the Erie Railroad in the late 1800’s. The decline of the railroad industry in the late 1900’s halted the city’s growth, but in the 21st century, major businesses and firms are looking to Steuben County as a prime relocation area. Today, the leading employers in Hornell are Alstom, a 100-year old European rail company that adopted this rail city as its U.S. base, the construction company A. L. Blades and Sons, and Steuben Tile. The City of Hornell Industrial Development Agency (CHIDA) owns three industrial parks totaling 210 acres, and has many programs in place offering new firms attractive incentives for relocating to this thriving community.

The Census 2000 recorded Hornell’s population at 9,019. Residents have access to top-notch education through Alfred University, the New York College of Technology, and the Steuben Allegany Board of Cooperative Education Services (Boces).
